Avast VPN offers only one protocol, OpenVPN with AES-256 encryption. This is a remarkably strong encryption algorithm that is classified as military grade, and it’s the same cipher that is used by banks. Avast uses a few other encryption technologies as well such as ChaCha20 and RSA-2048.

The Avast VPN client on desktops and Android devices will automatically select the most suitable protocol for your connection. It initially tries to connect with OpenVPN, and then switches to Mimic when that is unsuccessful. My experience has shown that this is not the most efficient way of choosing a protocol. It would be better that the client has an option to choose a specific protocol that you prefer, and let you know how successful it was.

Avast VPN is a VPN that has a wide range of servers. It has 700+ locations in over 34 countries. However I’m not certain if the list is kept up-to-date enough considering that the VPN didn’t have any servers in China during my tests. There are some identifying elements of information that Avast tracks about your use including your full name and zip their explanation code.

Avast’s headquarters are located in the Czech Republic. This country is GDPR compliant and is not an affiliate of any Eyes Alliance surveillance group. The company does keep some connection logs that can be used to identify users, and the “no-logs” policy does not exclude this. They accept payments via PayPal and credit cards, but do record billing information. They also allow a couple of cookies to monitor your activities online.
